What Is Tasawwuf!

Tassawwuf is derived from the word safai (cleanliness). Islam gives a lot of importance to cleanliness. As per one Hadith; 'Paki(cleanliness) is half the Imaan(Belief in Allah)'. This cleanliness does not only means outward cleanliness but internal cleanliness also. Rather it is more important.
In Qur'an, Allah has revealed the reason of sending Mohammed (PBUH) on this earth. And these are (i) he cleans the hearts of people by making them pure (ii) he calls people towards Allah (iii) he teaches them the knowledge of hikmat .
Now a days people are giving importance to only one aspect, to which they are associated with, and consider this to be the way of prophet(SAW) [Kar-e-Nabuwat]. And these people fall prey to ghulu(Excessive Indulgence), and consider the other two aspects not so important. This is not the right way, actually the sum total of all these three aspects, is the prophet's(SAW) work.
If we introspect, it can be inferred that Tazkiyah, Tassawwuf and Ihsaan-o-suluk are the soul of both the work, that is, Education and Learning (Taleem o Taallum) and calling people to Allah and spreading the message of Allah (Dawat-w-Tableegh). Without the help, guidance and support of the former, the latter can get lost.
The initiation of Tassawwuf is purifying the Niyat and the completion is feeling of presence of Allah all the time
If anything is done without purifying the niyat(Tasheeh-e-niyat) and without seeking guidance from Allah, is surely going to get lost. Instead of benefitting the human beings, it might be disastareous.
The exact meaning of Sulook is 'to walk'. The person who walks in the way of Allah is called Salik. Salik is a person who walks in the way of Allah, with purity, love of Allah, following the Allah completely and with the feeling that Allah is present everywhere and all the time.
What we have promised to Allah (Wada-e-alast) before coming to this world, by and by it gets diminished. Purifying our hearts from the worldly affairs, but still living in this world is the essence of Tssawwuf, Tazkiyah and Ehsaan.
